Raised in a fully English French bilingual family and living in a francophone environment, I was fortunate to attend private schools and study Latin, Greek and advanced French, all of which set a solid background for my English French translator career.

French translation

French Translation is an activity comprising of the interpretation of the meaning of a text in English — called the source text—and the production of a new, equivalent text in French —called the target text, or the translation.

Traditionally, translation has been a human activity, although attempts have been made to automate and computerize the translation of natural language texts—machine translation—or to use computers as an aid to translation—computer-assisted translation.

The goal of translation is to establish a relationship of equivalence between the source and the target texts (that is to say, to ensure that both texts communicate the same message), while taking into account a number of constraints. These constraints include context, the rules of grammar of the source language, its writing conventions, its idioms and the like.

There are specific rules and guidelines to a language's grammar, but the accurate “translation” of ideas and meaning from one language to another leaves much discretion to the translator. It takes an experienced professional for accurate translation and interpretation of ideas between languages.

Translation prices vary with quantity and difficulty. The following are guidelines to help evaluate the overall cost for a translation done by E-F-T and they are not a guarantee of the translation price that will be quoted.

The primary factor in determining a translation price is the number of source words. If only the number of pages is known, an assumption of the number of words per page is made.

The total cost is calculated by applying a rate per word to the total number of words. At this moment, E-F-T's rates vary from $0.13 to $0.19 CAD per word.
